Last year, as part of Amazon’s First Reads program, I read Isabella Maldonado’s crime novel, The Cipher. It introduced Nina Guerrera (aka, “Warrior Girl”). to readers. Guerrera was abandoned in a dumpster as a baby, raised (and abused) in foster homes, and aged out of the system. The injustices she suffered fueled her desire to see justice for the vulnerable, so she became a local law enforcement officer, then joined the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit. In The Cipher and its sequel, A Different Dawn, Guerrera and the BAU team track serial killers whose rage comes to focus on Warrior Girl.
