Universalism and the Problem of Evil

I’m reading The Evangelical Universalist by Gregory MacDonald as research for an article on universalism that I’m writing. (MacDonald is a pseudonym for Robin Parry.) On page 38, MacDonald—citing Thomas Talbott—lists three propositions: It is God’s redemptive purpose for the world (and therefore his will) to reconcile all sinners to himself. It is within God’s power to achieve his redemptive purpose for the world. Some sinners will never be reconciled to God, and God will therefore either consign them to a place of eternal punishment, from which there will be no hope of escape, or put them out of existence … Continue reading Universalism and the Problem of Evil

ANTI-DAWKINS ATHEIST FOR FAITH: “Does God Exist?” What troubles me about Dawkins’ pronouncements is his wholesale dismissal of religion and religious sensibility. In a speech at the Edinburgh International Science Festival, in 1992, Dawkins said: “Faith is the great cop-out, the great excuse to evade the need to think and evaluate evidence. Faith is belief in spite of, even perhaps because of, the lack of evidence.” And a month after Sept. 11, 2001, Dawkins told the British newspaper the Guardian: “Many of us saw religion as harmless nonsense. Beliefs might lack all supporting evidence but, we thought, if people needed … Continue reading The World Wide (Religious) Web for Tuesday, October 4, 2011

YOUCEF NADARKHANI WATCH: The Islamic Republic of Iran arrested, indicted, tried, convicted, and sentenced to death Rev. Youcef Nadarkhani for the crime of apostasy from Islam. International outcry against this egregious violation of religious freedom has embarrassed Iran, evidently, which is now claiming that Nadarkhani committed other crimes. The Associated Press reports, “Iranian pastor to be put to death for rape, not apostasy”: Christian Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani will be put to death for several charges of rape and extortion, charges that differ greatly from his original sentence of apostasy, the semi official Fars News agency reported Friday. The American Center … Continue reading The World Wide (Religious) Web for Monday, October 3, 2011

YOUCEF NADARKHANI WATCH: “U.S. condemns Iranian pastor’s conviction.” The White House Thursday condemned the conviction of an Iranian pastor, who may be executed in Tehran for refusing to recant his religious beliefs and convert from Christianity to Islam. Pastor Youcef Nadarkhani “has done nothing more than maintain his devout faith, which is a universal right for people,” a White House spokesman said in a statement. “That the Iranian authorities would try to force him to renounce that faith violates the religious values they claim to defend, crosses all bounds of decency and breaches Iran’s own international obligations.” The United States … Continue reading The World Wide (Religious) Web for Friday, September 30, 2011
