“Be Thou My Vision”

Here are the lyrics. The video eliminates verse 4 and varies the lyrics throughout. Be Thou my vision, O Lord of my heart; Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art. Thou my best thought, by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. Be Thou my Wisdom, Thou my true Word; I ever with Thee, Thou with me, Lord; Thou my great Father, I thy true son; Thou in me dwelling, and I with Thee one. Be Thou my battle-shield, sword for my fight, Be Thou my dignity, Thou my delight. Thou my soul’s … Continue reading “Be Thou My Vision”

“Before the Throne of God Above”

Before the throne of God above I have a strong, a perfect plea: A great High Priest, whose name is Love, Who ever lives and pleads for me. My name is graven on his hands, My name is written on his heart; I know that while in heaven he stands No tongue can bid me thence depart No tongue can bid me thence depart. When Satan tempts me to despair, And tells me of the guilt within, Upward I look, and see him there Who made an end of all my sin. Because a sinless Savior died, My sinful soul … Continue reading “Before the Throne of God Above”

Are sex offenders and lads’ mags talking the same language? Disturbingly, a UK study says, “Yes.”

From a University of Surrey press release: Far from being harmless or ironic fun, lads’ mags could be legitimising hostile sexist attitudes, according to new research. Psychologists from Middlesex University and the University of Surrey found that when presented with descriptions of women taken from lads’ mags, and comments about women made by convicted rapists, most people who took part in the study could not distinguish the source of the quotes. The research due to be published in the British Journal of Psychology also revealed that most men who took part in the study identified themselves more with the language … Continue reading Are sex offenders and lads’ mags talking the same language? Review of “The Circle Maker” by Mark Batterson

Mark Batterson, The Circle Maker: Praying Circles Around Your Biggest Dreams and Greatest Fears (Grand Rapids, MI: Zondervan, 2011). $19.99, 224 pages. In the First Century B.C., during a period of extreme drought, a Jewish man named Honi stood outside the walls of Jerusalem, drew a circle around himself, and prayed the following prayer: “Lord of the universe, I swear before Your great name that I will not move from this circle until You have shown mercy upon Your children.” Jerusalem’s religious leaders were appalled at this man’s audacity. Then it rained. Mark Batterson opens The Circle Maker with this … Continue reading Review of “The Circle Maker” by Mark Batterson
