Friends of God?

Alexandra Pelosi has a new documentary about evangelical Christians, Friends of God. Its title is derived from an Israel Houghton worship song that forms the background music for much of the film. Although the film has drawn the predictable ire of evangelical groups such as Focus on the Family, Michael Linton suggests that it reveals some real weaknesses in evangelical culture. Make sure to read his lengthy post at the First Things blog.

  1. Beth Moore’s Bible study, The Patriarchs, came out in 2005. In one of the lessons, she criticized the lyrics of Friend of God, citing John 15:14: “You are my friends if you do what I command.”

I agreed with some of Michael Linton’s points, but not with his apparent indignation about “Falwell’s politically motivated insult to Senator Clinton (demeaningly calling her by her first name) . . . .” If Linton thinks that is insulting, he should check out the official Hillary for President website (“Hillary Speaks Out,” “Host your own Hillary event,” “New Poll: Hillary Up,” etc.). Also, I would take Alexandra Pelosi’s professed admiration for Evangelicals with a grain of salt. She wanted to portray herself as an objective person, and she wanted people to watch her HBO documentary. I understand that while promoting her documentary, she said that Evangelicals call HBO “Hell’s Box Office.” Maybe some do, but I’ve never heard anyone say that before.
